1. What I really like about the Rolex Explorer 114270 is it's understated, tough, but most of all, versatile. Arguably most referred to as the "One Watch" or the "Only Watch" you'll ever need. There is a certain nostalgia that goes with the Rolex Explorer. A true gentleman's watch. It's quiet enough to not show off, tough enough.

The Rolex Explorer reference 14270, and its associated reference 114270, may not be the first model that collectors would opt for when thinking of acquiring a coveted sports model from the brand, but for many this is definitely a worthy contender when there are budgetary considerations in place.

#2 ยท Apr 4, 2020 The 114270 has SELs, a more modern movement and a super luminova dial. All that for not a whole lot more than the 14270. The five digit reference has a tritium dial, but it's kind of negated by the painted numerals. So any patina might look odd.

Which Rolex Explorer 14270 or 114270 or 214270???

Explorer 114270 uses Caliber 3130 which is a movement still used as of 2020 in many models, including the Submariner No-Date model. The 3130 is really a rock-solid movement which improves a lot over the Caliber 3000 used on the older 14270. sporturawus โ€ข 4 yr. ago. In 2016, Rolex made a surprising move by updating the Explorer ref. 214270 with longer and broader hands in addition to luminescent 3, 6, and 9 numerals, but kept the same reference number. In short, the Explorer ref. 114270 is the smaller and more classic version of the Explorer, while the Explorer ref. 214270 is the larger and more modern.

It's the 114270 reference that was made between 2001 and 2010 (after the 14270 that introduced the "modern" Explorer style, and before the 214270 took the size up to 39mm for over a decade.) This one is from 2004 and the full set included the original purchase receipt (ยฃ1,950 - bargain!) I've never had a watch that I've enjoyed.

The Case There are no surprises with the case. The 14270 Explorer has a 36mm oyster style case that is distinctly Rolex. The lug to lug is only 43.6mm. Combine that with a height of 11.1mm and you have a neat and compact package that many will find extremely comfortable. Its size makes it a great watch for couples to share.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 14270 and it's 3000 movement, I chose to go with the upgraded 114270 after reading James Dowling's article below. For the new Explorer 114270, Rolex fitted it with the updated Caliber 3130 movement . On the outside of the Explorer 114270, Rolex did add solid end links to the Oyster bracelet, removed the lug holes from the case, and switched to Super-LumiNova for its luminous material; however, almost everything else stayed the same.
